An Australian artist who suffered from the first creative impulse late and in unusual circumstances, as a prisoner during the Second World War. Despite the hostile conditions, he was inspired by the beauty of Japan and devoted his first sketches. After the war Mitchell studied art at East Sydney Technical College and became the first artist in Australia interested in abstract expressionism / action painting in the spirit of Jackson Pollock or Willem de Kooning. His inspiration came from a variety of sources: from current artistic trends, architecture or Japan, to advertising and fashion. These influences were processed and merged, culminating in a collage painting affirming the joy of life. His work was regularly exhibited in the 1940s and 1950s. Mitchell was posthumously honored with solo exhibitions in Sydney: Mosman Art Gallery and Ken Done Gallery.
